A Mother’s Day Reflection on the Dangers of Skin Cancer

With May being the month of Mother’s Day, I wanted to take a moment to talk about a topic dear to my heart- preventing cancer.  I just returned back to work from maternity leave, and am excited for the opportunity to write something for the May newsletter because this is the first Mother’s Day that I am happy to celebrate it as a mom.  My mother passed away from cancer in 2002.  That same year, my college roommate’s mother passed away from skin cancer.  Recently, someone who is close to me and a new mother herself found out that her own mother was diagnosed with skin cancer.  We all know someone who has been affected by cancer.  According to the American Cancer Society, “skin cancer is by far the most common type of cancer”.  This time of year, as we begin to spend more time being active outdoors, it is so important to apply sunscreen.
Choosing skin care products that are organic and free of harsh chemicals will minimize the exposure your body has to toxins.  We should do everything we can to prevent all types of cancer and using natural products is a step in the right direction.  Many of the sun care products on the market are loaded with damaging chemicals.   There are two types of sun protection, chemical and physical.  Chemical sunscreens are absorbed into the skin whereas physical sunscreens reflect the UV off the skin and are not absorbed into the skin at all.  The ingredients in MARIA ÅKERBERG Deepskin Organics Sun Lotion SPF 20 and Sun Protecting Oil SPF 15 are all natural.  They work as a physical barrier between your skin and ultraviolet radiation from the sun. One of the best ways that we can protect ourselves from the dangers of skin cancer and premature aging is applying sunscreen when we head outdoors.
